I submit man has created life - Proving no need for god

Believers claim life is to complex to “just happen". Someone, some “god” must have created it, must have planned it, and must continue to guide it. Believers equate the creation of life to throwing parts into a box, shaking it, and then having working 747 Jet liner fly out the other side.

With colleague Tracey Lincoln, Gerald Joyce (picured) has created an artificial genetic system that can undergo self-sustained replication and evolution

According to the Dictionary, http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/life
The 1st definition of life is:
the condition that distinguishes organisms from inorganic objects and dead organisms, being manifested by growth through metabolism, reproduction, and the power of adaptation to environment through changes originating internally.

Lets look at one of the building blocks of life. RNA is the building blocks of life as we know it. It is the building blocks of proteins. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RNA

Here’s the great part: Scientists have created RNA that replicates itself, on it own!
http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/news/3325/life-evolution-a-test-tube
Given the right conditions, these molecules continue to replicate till their “fuel” is consumed. Growth? Reproduction? Consumption? That by itself, I submit, fits the definition of life. Life, by the hand of man. No god, no box shaking, just the basics and there have it.

We must cast off the dark shroud of ignorance. The shroud that hinders our ability to solve problems and move forward. The dark shroud is Region.

God dwells in the darkness of ignorance. The more we learn, the less the faithful have to cling on to. Believers point and say “there, you can’t explain that! There must be a god!”. Eventually, they will be left with nothing but denial and distortion of truth. Just because science can not explain something today, doesn’t mean we won’t be able to explain it tomorrow.

The reality is life happens and we can duplicate it. There is no divine hand of a hidden all seeing being, there is just natural processes.

Religion is Evil

I submit that Religion is Evil.

Let us start with the definition of Evil:
evil
    Spelled Pronunciation [ee-vuh l] –adjective
1. morally wrong or bad; immoral; wicked: evil deeds; an evil life.
2. harmful; injurious: evil laws.
3. characterized or accompanied by misfortune or suffering; unfortunate; disastrous: to be fallen on evil days.
4. due to actual or imputed bad conduct or character: an evil reputation.
5. marked by anger, irritability, irascibility, etc.: He is known for his evil disposition

In its simplest form, Evil is deeds that are harmful, or lead to misfortune or suffering.

If someone walking down a street, sees an old woman next to them slip, fall get hurt and choose not to lend assistance, just walk away…. Is that Evil? In this case it’s a failure of a deed that leads to harm, misfortune and suffering. The court systems will find you liable if you have some problem with your property – a hole, broken sidewalk, hazardous waste, etc - and choose not to remedy. Thus, failure to act, is itself a deed that can be evil when it leads to harm, misfortune and suffering.

Religions greatest crime against humanity is stops thought. It requires “faith”, which by definition is simple acceptance without challenge. Don’t think about it… just accept.

The result is that people stop looking for answers to problems in times of strife, and “believe” God will save them. They believe all they have to do is be “faithful’ or “sacrifice” , and they will be rescued to some “paradise”.

As proof, just look at the Flagellant Movement. These are the dolts that whip or torture themselves because they believe their suffering brings them closer to Jesus and his suffering. The Flagellant Movement was born during the black plague.

People believed the Plague was a punishment from God because of mans wickedness. They didn’t try to figure it out, they didn’t clean, wash, get rid of rats or flea’s, they just fell back on “faith” and whipped themselves. Had that effort and energy been spent trying to understand the problem, then fixing the problem, millions of people could have been saved… Not by the hand of god, but by people learning, doing, acting, working. This is a clear case of “Faith” failing humanity ultimately leading to the deaths of millions.

Is this historical tragedy so far in the past? Unfortunately no, this same mindless hindrance to reason and action continues in the name of faith and god. The growing population of Evangelicals and their obsession with “The Rapture” could lead us to the same dire consequences as the Flagellants. They see all the horrible things in current news and rejoice, because they believe “god” is coming to take them to paradise. Lets not try and help humanity, fix problems, make the future better for our children, lets just pray and be faithful waiting for “his glorious return”. Let’s outlaw stem cell research, lets teach dogma in school as fact, lets suppress new ideas…

All these are current, they are happening today.
They are done in the name of Religion.
They lead to leads to harm, misfortune and suffering.

There are no atheists strapping bombs to themselves with the intent of killing as many as possible. These are all Religious people.

The inescapable conclusion is that Religion is Evil.

Yet ANOTHER nail in the Creationists coffin.

There’s a fascinating story about animal domestication. Here’s a brief summery:

A Russian geneticist bread silver foxes based on the single trait of “tameness”. In less that 10 generations, the foxes became “doglike”: they became smaller, their colors changed, they became playful though out adulthood, they began to bark, some would answer to their name….

The goal of the experiment was to produce an animal that would be easier to handle by the Russian fur industry. The result was proof that evolution can make leaps and bounds in just a few years.

The trait of “tameness” is exhibited based on a complex bio-chemical process.

This is just another example proving there is no god, there’s no creation, there’s just nature. Natural processes work quickly when allowed and easily explain the diversity of life on the planet.

Life is Sweeter to an Atheist

Think of if this way....
To those believers of a next life, resurrection or those just looking forward the rapture...

What if those things never will happen? What if all you will ever have is right here, right now. You have to make it work this time, with these people, on this Earth. I believe when you die, you're dead. That's it. The show is over. I won't be around forever. Every single breath is precious. Not single mistake can be re-done in some new paradise or is erased in land with 69 virgins and rivers of honey. You will never have another opportunity to tell your loved ones how you feel.

You tell them today. You treat each person with the respect they deserve. You smell the flowers on your walk to work. You listen to the children play as you pass the park. My time on this planet is so precious; I can’t miss a minute of it. My mistakes are mine, and no one else’s responsibility. This is the only time I will ever have to appreciate beauty.

I absolutely have to make it count.

That is why life is so much more to an atheist.

A place to share, air and illuminate

Let me start by saying I was baptized and graduated from a Catholic high school. I studied religion in school and have read both new and old testaments. I am familiar with dogma, tradition and rituals. By trade, I use logic and reason to solve problems. I have studied science, physics, and mathematics. The application of what mankind has learned over the past two hundred years, using an open mind, reason and critical thinking, leads to one inescapable conclusion: There are no gods, demons, magic or mysticism. There is only the real world.

This blog is a form to share and open the closed minds of zealots, or if nothing else, allow a relieve valve to rant on those things I see as the harbinger of ignorance.

I welcome anyone, any comments, any arguments, anything…. I shall remain open, but so must you. I challenge you … Can you prove god to me?
